In 1922 werd VCU opgericht met als voornaamste doel het gezamenlijk inkopen van gasolie. Sindsdien is het leveren van gasolie aan de aangesloten vloot een essentiële pijler van het bedrijf gebleven. Zelfs vandaag de dag profiteren tal van maritieme bedrijven van de gunstige gasolietarieven die VCU biedt. Hoofdzakelijk bedient VCU haar leden, maar ook andere klanten kunnen vaak profiteren van voordelige deals.
VCU koopt gasolie voor leveringen binnen Nederland tegen beursprijzen en heeft gunstige afspraken met gerenommeerde bunkerbedrijven voor het pompen van olie in schepen. Vanuit hun moderne bedrijfspand in Urk worden bunkeringen gecoördineerd en worden ontwikkelingen in de olieprijzen nauwlettend gevolgd om op gunstige momenten in te kopen.
VCU houdt een wekelijkse voorraad gasolie bij voor bunkeringen en streeft naar uitmuntende kwaliteit. Voor leveringen in het buitenland heeft VCU een uitgebreid netwerk van lokale leveranciers in havens van Groot-Brittannië, Duitsland, Frankrijk en Denemarken. Het bedrijf blijft voortdurend zoeken naar gunstige afspraken met lokale leveranciers om het buitenlandse netwerk verder uit te bouwen en te optimaliseren. Dit stelt VCU in staat om vaak uit meerdere leveranciers te kiezen, wat de prijs voor gasolie voor schepen in het buitenland ten goede komt.

VCU Safetycentre B.V. (werkzaam onder de ISO 9001-2015 norm) is een aparte B.V. binnen VCU en richt zich voornamelijk op de veiligheid aan boord van schepen zoals visserij, offshore, binnenvaart en watersport.
VCU Safetycentre garandeert deze veiligheid door het periodiek keuren en certificeren van veiligheidsmiddelen zoals reddingsvlotten, hijs- en hefmiddelen, reddingsvesten, brandblussers en medicijnkisten. Daarvoor wordt het veiligheidscentrum gecertificeerd door Inspectie Leefomgeving en Transport (ILenT), TüV Nederland en de fabrikanten waarvan men de veiligheidsproducten mag keuren.
