At VCU, we believe that people make the difference. Our colleagues are the driving force behind our organization. Meet Theun from VCU Safetycentre, in this edition he shares insights about his work at the Safetycentre and what it means to contribute to safety in the maritime sector.
Safety at sea starts in the service facility
Theun has now been working at VCU for almost nine years. He started as an inspector of life jackets and grew into a role where he is responsible for all aspects of safety on board. From inspecting and certifying safety equipment to administrative processing and customer contact. His work is versatile and requires precision, knowledge of regulations, and a strong sense of responsibility.
“We make sure everything on board meets international standards. That means we inspect and maintain life jackets, rafts, immersion suits, emergency communication devices, and lifting gear. If something isn’t right, we take action. In the end, it’s all about the safety of people at sea.”
A workday with impact
What Theun values most in his work is the variety and the trust he receives. He is personally responsible for planning his day and achieving results. His work involves organizing inspections, coordinating with customers, and managing the related documentation. “I spend a lot of time at my desk, but I also step in at the workshop when needed. That keeps the work dynamic.”
New colleagues receive plenty of guidance. In the beginning, you always work alongside an experienced colleague and learn the trade step by step. Each year, VCU Safetycentre inspects around 1,800 life jackets and approximately 300 life rafts. “There’s plenty of work. You definitely won’t be bored here.”
Collaboration is in our DNA
According to Theun, collaboration within VCU comes naturally. “We have good contact with colleagues from other departments. If they notice something related to safety during a project, they call us in. And we do the same the other way around. We strengthen each other and work together to ensure that customers are well served.”
Opportunities for growth
At VCU, there is plenty of room for development. Many colleagues started out in the workshop and have moved on to leadership roles. Training and courses are available, but most of the learning happens on the job. According to Theun, it’s all about dedication and eagerness to learn. “If you show initiative and want to grow, you’ll get every opportunity here.”
Why choose VCU
Finally, Theun has a clear message for anyone hesitating to apply. “If you’re looking for a job where you truly make a difference, the Safetycentre is a great place. You work with both your hands and your head, in a team that collaborates and supports each other. And the best part is: you contribute to safety. That gives your work real value.”
