VCU Maritime

VCU Maritime specializes in providing complete service solutions, including the supply and installation of steel wires, chains, ropes, and netting.

Fishing nets

The production of complete fishing nets takes place in close collaboration with our customers. A key element in this process is our proprietary simulation software, developed in-house by VCU. This program allows us to realistically simulate net designs for various fishing methods, significantly improving their functionality and effectiveness. All designs are carefully stored and managed within our net management system.

Service on location

From custom outfitting of vessels to crew assistance, VCU delivers full-service maritime support. With a fleet of fully equipped service vehicles, including four crane trucks (65 to 110 ton/metre capacity) we provide high-quality on-site solutions. Our cranes are fitted with hydraulic systems and heavy-duty winches, enabling us to professionally tension and wind new wires and ropes onto your vessel, while removing and disposing of the old lines all in one visit.

Techniques

Twinrig

Twin-rig fishing involves the use of two nets that are deployed overboard from the stern of the vessel.

The two nets are connected to each other horizontally. At the outer ends of the nets, there are otter boards, and in the center, where the nets are joined, a central weight is attached. As the rubber cables are dragged behind the otter boards, clouds of sediment are stirred up, startling the fish and causing them to swim into the nets.

This fishing method is primarily used to catch plaice. For twin-rig fishing, VCU Maritime offers everything needed to equip your vessel for this technique. This includes otter boards, central weights, rubber cables, and the nets themselves.

Quadrig

In quadrig fishing, four nets are deployed overboard from the stern of the vessel. The four nets are connected to each other horizontally. At the outer ends of the nets, otter boards are attached, and in the center where the nets are joined a central weight or clump is positioned.

This fishing method is primarily used to catch langoustine.

For quadrig fishing, VCU Maritime offers everything needed to equip your vessel for this method. This includes otter boards, central weights, rubber cables, and the nets them

Singlerig

In single rig fishing, a single net is deployed over the stern of the vessel. This method is also known as otter board fishing

At both ends of the net, there is an otter board, which is connected to the vessel via the fishing lines.
This fishing method is primarily used to catch squid on rough and rocky seabeds.

For single rig fishing, VCU Maritime offers everything you need to equip your vessel for this type of fishery.

For more information, send us an e-mail or get in touch via the contactpagina.

Outrig

Outrig fishing involves the use of two nets, with each outrig net equipped with its own otter boards on either side.

Outrig fishing is applied on beam trawl vessels, where each outrigger operates a trawl door on either side of the ship, fishing with a single net stretched between the two doors.”

VCU Maritime offers all the necessary equipment for outrig fishing, including specialized outrig trawl doors, nets, and all materials required to convert your vessel to the outrig fishing method

Beam trawl (sole and plaice)

Beam trawl fishing involves the use of two nets, deployed simultaneously from both sides of the vessel using outriggers The nets are kept open by means of an iron pipe, also referred to as a beam. Attached to the gear are tickler chains, which stir up the seabed and startle flatfish, causing them to swim up into the path of the nets

22-meter-high shaft

VCU Maritime has a 22-meter-high shaft, which is unique within the Dutch fishing industry and offers significant advantages to fishermen.

The advantages of this net chute are:

  • The fishing net can be fully deployed in the fishing position.
  • All applications within the fishing net can be carried out efficiently.
  • The entire fishing net can be fed directly on board.

Flyshoot

Flyshoot fishing involves the use of a single net and approximately 2 x 3,500 meters of combination rope.

During fishing operations, a buoy is first deployed overboard, to which the flyshoot rope (combination rope) of approximately 3,500 meters is attached. The vessel then sails in a half-circle.

Next, the net is set overboard. The vessel completes the circle using the second 3,500-meter rope and returns to the buoy.

At this point, the crew retrieves the end of the rope along with the buoy and hauls in the net.

With flyshoot fishing, the vessel remains mostly stationary while the net is being hauled in.

For flyshoot fishing, VCU Maritime offers everything you need to fully equip your vessel. This includes the VCU CombiRope, flyshoot nets, as well as the buoy set and all necessary leaders, bridles, and hauling equipment to complete the setup.
